Elizabeth G. Stewart, MD, FACOG

Panelist Bio: All About Dr. Elizabeth G. Stewart

One of just a few vulvovaginal experts in the U.S., Elizabeth Gunther Stewart, MD, is a Boston-based, board-certified veteran gynecologist and Director of the Stewart-Forbes Vulvovaginal Specialty Service at Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates, a renowned vulvar specialty service in Boston. Dr. Stewart is also assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Harvard Medical School and serves on the staff of Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Considered a prominent, vulvovaginal practitioner, researcher and teacher who speaks extensively about vulvovaginal conditions and diseases to other medical professionals, Dr. Stewart also works with lay groups to promote awareness of vulva and vaginal health. A strong advocate of advancing women’s basic understanding of the vulva and vagina, Dr. Stewart is helping to educate women about the importance of seeing a gynecologist, as well as understanding and treating a range of vulvovaginal conditions, from skin irritations, vaginal infections and allergies, to painful sex, abnormal Pap smears and cervical cancer. She is a major proponent of encouraging women of all ages to undergo a routine, gynecological exam and to be educated patients, knowing which medical tests to request, as well as what questions to ask their doctor.

Knowing how difficult this is for some women, Dr. Stewart authored The V Book: A Doctor’s Guide To Complete Vulvovaginal Health (Bantam Books, 2002), an extensive and factual overview of all things related to vulvovaginal health, written in a consumer-friendly style, along with answers to questions about vaginal issues that affect every woman. The book is an extension of her lectures, her clinical experiences with patients and patient-education materials she has prepared. As Dr. Stewart notes in the introduction to her book, “I want women everywhere to be informed, to be dazzled by the parts of our anatomy that represent the beauty of womanhood, the miracle of reproduction, and the joy of sexual function.”
