Jane Ruth Schwebke, MD, FACP

Panelist Bio: All About Dr. Jane Ruth Schwebke

Jane Ruth Schwebke, MD, FACP, is a nationally recognized expert in sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), with experience ranging from public health to clinical investigation. She holds the positions of Professor of Medicine in the Department of Medicine/ Infectious Diseases and Professor of Epidemiology in the School of Public Health at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine. In addition, Dr Schwebke is Director of the University of Alabama at Birmingham's Nosocomial Infections Research Facility and has served for more than a decade as Medical Director of the Jefferson County Department of Health Sexually Transmitted Diseases Clinic in Birmingham, Alabama.

The recipient of many grants, Dr. Schwebke’s interests include detection and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases, genomics, and epidemiology. Recent research topics include control of trichomoniasis, the association between genital tract Cytomegalovirus infection and bacterial vaginosis, and the association between psychosocial stress and bacterial vaginosis. She has lectured extensively and published many articles, abstracts, and textbook chapters on these and related subjects and was a consultant for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) 2006 STD Treatment Guidelines.

Dr Schwebke’s expertise has been recognized with a nomination from the CDC/Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry for an Outstanding Scientific Contribution to Public Health Award and a 2002-2003 fellowship at the prestigious Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Program for Women, part of the Institute for Women’s Health at MCP Hahnemann University in Philadelphia.
